A learner has been killed after he was stabbed by a fellow learner at a school in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Another learner is fighting for his life in hospital.

Nqobani Ntuli’s life ended at the door of the principal’s office at Ikhandlela Secondary School in eSikhaleni near Richards Bay‚ the Zululand Observer reported.

Sanele Hlatswayo is reportedly recovering in hospital.

It is understood their attacker assaulted the boys inside a school toilet during a lunch break on Wednesday.

The newspaper reported a fight broke out between the teens on Tuesday over another learner’s stolen cell phone.

Police were summoned to the scene and defused the situation.

“The fight continued during our break time and that’s when Sphamandla stabbed both guys with a knife‚” a witness said.

Ngobani died after being stabbed in the chest‚ but not before he dragged himself to the principal’s office.

The newspaper photographed a trail of blood leading from the ablution block across the courtyard.

Sanele meanwhile was taken to a local clinic before being transferred to Ngwelezana Hospital near Empangeni.

The suspect fled the scene and jumped over a fence.

He was arrested by police half an hour later at a home nearby.

Police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose said the suspect was likely to appear in court on Friday on charges of murder and attempted murder.

The MEC for Basic Education in KZN Mthandeni Dlungwana called for calm in the community‚ pleading with locals not to take the law into their own hands.

“As the department‚ we have already sent a team of officials led by the District Director David Chonco to visit the families of both victims with an intention to offer condolences and assistance where possible‚” he said in a statement.
