The ANC Youth League has "big plans" for Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma following her tenure as the Africa Union Commission chairperson but will only reveal details of those plans after June.

The ANC leadership has called on party members to refrain from endorsing anyone to take over as the ANC president when Jacob Zuma's term comes to an end until nominations are officially opened at the policy conference in June.

"The ANC Youth League has big plans for you but we cannot tell it to you now," said Youth League president Collen Maine at the OR Tambo International Airport.

Dlamini-Zuma was welcomed by members of both the Youth League and the Women's League at the airport as she arrived home following the end of her term as the Africa Union Commission chairperson.

Maine's comments are seen as an indication that the young lions could nominate her as the next person to lead the ruling party when President Jacob Zuma's reign comes to an end in December.

Dlamini-Zuma is up against deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa for the top leadership position ahead of the much anticipated ANC elective conference in December.

The Youth League had previously said the announcement of their preferred candidate for the position will send "shockwaves" in the ANC.

The young lions have have described Dlamini-Zuma as "one of the finest leaders ever produced by the organisation" and that she "represents an epitome of female leadership".

"We welcome you back to the country, we hope now you must continue your work to work for South Africa and the ANC building up to the 2019 national elections and building up towards building a stronger ANC in the upcoming policy and national conferences of the ANC," said ANCYL secretary-general Njabulo Nzuza.

They have also called on deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa to refrain from making himself available to be the next party president on media platforms.

“All that we are condemning is people making themselves available prior to being nominated. Nobody has nominated Ramaphosa so he should await his nomination. The process of the ANC is that a branch must nominate you and then you must accept nomination‚” said Nzuza.
