Hawks officers have shut down an illegal gold and platinum manufacturing lab in Gauteng‚ where they recovered R5-million worth of precious metals.

The operation saw officers storm a house in Lenasia South last night.

Hawks spokesman Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said officers from the South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau and Crime Intelligence received information on the operation of the clandestine laboratory.

He said the lab was allegedly used to process gold and platinum.

“When officers raided the house they discovered unprocessed gold‚ gold concentrate material‚ gold nuggets‚ unprocessed platinum‚ and refined platinum‚ as well as the manufacturing equipment valued at R5-million.”

He said a 31-year-old man was arrested on charges of illegally manufacturing precious metals.

The man is to appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
