An armed man is holding his girlfriend hostage in Tladi‚ Soweto‚ in a stand-off with police that has been going on since Wednesday morning.

Captain Mbulaheni Netshivhodza‚ spokesperson for the Soweto West cluster‚ was quoted on on Radio 702 as saying that the situation was tense‚ but that police were doing their best to resolve the situation through negotiation

“He locked both of them in the house since the early hours of the morning with a firearm. The police are currently negotiating the safe release of the woman‚” Netshivhodza said.

Police were alerted to the situation by residents who reported hearing gunshots.

The 37-year-old man had locked himself and the woman inside a four-roomed house and had warned the SAPS negotiating team that he would shoot himself and his girlfriend if his demands were not met.

“All the doors are locked and he has told us that he doesn’t want members of the community... near the room‚” Netshivhodza said.

Another of his demands is that his girlfriend does not break up with him. — TMG Digital
