R8m gold bar bust at OR Tambo

Customs officials arrested a man with 16kg of gold bars worth R8 million in his suitcase at OR Tambo International Airport‚ the SA Revenue Service said on Thursday.

“The passenger was in transit from Maputo‚ Mozambique to Dubai‚” Sars said in a statement.

“Upon inspection of the passenger’s travel documents‚ customs officials noted possible irregularities. An inspection of the passenger’s hand luggage led to the discovery of five gold bars.”

The documentation and gold bars were handed over to the Hawks precious metal unit. The man faces prosecution under Section 37 of the Precious Metals Act of 2005. — TMG Digital
