'Galephirimi used to kill two kids' - man in dock for triple murder

A "handyman and friend" has been accused of killing his employer and then returning to his house a day later to finish off his boss's son and grandson by feeding them food laced with poison.

Sifiso Maseko, 28, will today appear in the South Gauteng High Court sitting in Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court.

He is on trial for three counts of murder following the alleged fatal attacks on Vincent Africa and his son Bonolo Mlambo, 12, and grandson Thato Africa, 2.

Vincent's body was discovered at his house in Naturena, south of Johannesburg, on July 9 2015.

His son and grandson were found on July 8 inside his white BMW which was found in Germiston.

According to the indictment, Vincent was killed on July 5, while Bonolo and Thato were killed the following day.

When he took to the dock last week, Maseko told the court that Africa was his friend and that he helped him with chores such as gardening, shaving his head and driving him when he was drunk.

He further told the court people assumed that he was in a relationship with Africa because of Africa's "sexual orientation".

According to the indictment, Maseko was at Africa's house on July 5.

Maseko is alleged to have struck Africa on the head with a garden spade. He then allegedly left the spade next to Africa's body on the bed before he locked the corpse in the bedroom.

Maseko allegedly left the house using Africa's car.

The following day, Maseko returned to the house with Africa's car, picked up Bonolo and Thato and allegedly fed them food that had been poisoned.

After the children died, Maseko allegedly abandoned the car in Germiston on the East R and, with the bodies still in the vehicle .

Their bodies were discovered on July 8. Post-mortem results indicated that their deaths were "unnatural [and] consistent with aldicarb poisoning". Aldicarb is also referred to as two-step or galephirimi in townships.

"Galephirimi" is Sotho for "you will not see the sunset".

Maseko said he had known Africa for about seven years. He admitted that he was with Africa and his children on the day in question, but he later left the house. He denied that he had any knowledge of the murders.
