Sakhumzi Maqubela‚ owner of Sakhumzi Restaurant in popular Vilikazi street‚ Soweto‚ has thanked the public for an outpouring of support for him and his staff after one of his managers was shot dead in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The manager was shot seven times about 1 am‚ after he refused to allow three men to enter the restaurant‚ which was already closed.

The men fled from the scene.

“Thank you for your messages of support friends. This is a dark day for us and we are deeply saddened by what happened at the restaurant. Thank you for supporting us and being in our corner. We appreciate you‚” he said in a statement.

The post on the restaurant’s Facebook wall also stated: “We are appalled at this [murder] and wish to let our customers know that their safety is our priority. Our condolences to the friends and family of the deceased. Thank you so much to the community for your support.”

Police spokesman Kay Makhubela said police have not made any arrests. The manager’s name has not yet been released. The restaurant said it could not name him until his family had given the go-ahead.

Offering support in the wake of the shooting‚ Max Monyemore told Maqubela: “That wont stop us to come to that side..
