The funeral service of an Ekurhuleni police constable who was killed last week will be held at the Katlehong Stadium on Saturday morning.

Constable Tshepo Tladi and other police officers responded to an armed robbery at a petrol station in Katlehong last week‚ where his shooting was captured on CCTV footage obtained by The Times.

Initial reports from the Gauteng police spokesman‚ Captain Kay Makhubela‚ said Tladi was shot after being “ambushed” by heavily armed robbers.

However‚ the footage appeared to show that he was shot in the back of the head by a colleague.

On Tuesday‚ Acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane said the police service would be focusing investigations‚ in collaboration with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid)‚ on the members who were on the scene the night Tladi was shot in the back of the head.

“We are extremely shocked and disturbed by the video footage which we have seen and which is circulating online. Should there be evidence to prove that police members tampered with the scene or that there was any type of a cover-up‚ there will certainly be judicial consequences‚” Phahlane said in a statement.

On Monday‚ Ipid spokesperson Moses Dlamini said the police officers on the scene failed in their duty to report the shooting and that further viewing of the video revealed that they might have tampered with the scene.
