A man who holed himself up six storeys above the ground in a crane in Richards Bay has reportedly come down and given himself up to police.

It was original thought to be a hostage situation with two people on the crane‚ but this has been revised to one.

While details are still sketchy‚ Richard Schouten of IPSS Medical Rescue said earlier that police – including hostage negotiators — and paramedics were at Lira Link‚ near the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre‚ early on Monday morning.

“Hostage situation. Two persons barricaded in tower crane 6 floors up IPSS and SAPS hostage negotiation team busy trying to establish contact‚” he said via WhatsApp.

This is a developing story and will be updated. – TMG Digital/The Times
