Justice Minister Michael Masutha says National Prosecuting Authority (NDPP) head Shaun Abrahams was the best person to advise him about student violence on campuses.

That is why he met ANC officials at Luthuli House‚ the day before he announced controversial charges against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

DA MP Glynnis Breytenbach said on Friday that Masutha had‚ in a reply to a parliamentary question‚ stated that the NDPP was best placed to brief ANC leaders “on matters relevant to the violence that had erupted at institutions of higher learning in protestation of the “FeesMustFall” campaign”.

“This is odd considering that the NPA [National Prosecuting Authority] is concerned with prosecutions‚ not policing or the management of protests and/or riots‚” said Breytenbach.

The opposition party is planning to ask more questions in Parliament to “further probe the Minister’s reasoning on why Abrahams was at Luthuli House”.

Breytenbach asserted that Abrahams was not fit for office and had damaged the reputation of the NPA.
