Botched sleight-of-hand trick leads to uncut diamond haul in Cape Town CBD

It was a luxury sedan without valid number plates and shifty behaviour that led to the arrest of a resident of the upmarket suburb of Constantia for uncut diamonds in Cape Town.

The 51-year-old man attracted the attention of police who were on a routine‚ afternoon crime prevention patrol in the CBD on Wednesday who noticed the invalid number plates on his black BMW 750.

“Members stopped the vehicle at the corners of Adderley and Strand Street and upon enquiry pertaining to the registration‚ the driver could not produce any‚” explained Western Cape police spokesman‚ Captain FC van Wyk

The BMW driver got out of the vehicle and “took something out of his pocket and attempted to hand it over to his friend”.

Police officers noticed the sleight-of-hand trick and confiscated a plastic packet.

“They opened the package and noticed that there were 12 uncut diamonds wrapped inside. The driver could not account for the... diamonds and was subsequently arrested‚” said Van Wyk in a statement on Thursday.

The man will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court for being in possession of uncut diamonds on Friday. — TMG Digital
