Four people‚ including a child‚ were killed and 12 others injured on Saturday evening when a taxi and car collided on the north-bound N1‚ about 35km outside Polokwane in Limpopo‚ paramedics said.

ER24 paramedics‚ along with various other services‚ arrived on the scene shortly after 6pm and found a light motor vehicle in the middle of the road while a taxi lay some distance away on the side of the road.

“Several bodies were found strewn across the scene while several were found walking along the roadside‚” said ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring.

“On further assessment‚ paramedics found that two men‚ a woman and a young girl‚ believed to be four years old‚ had sustained fatal injuries. Unfortunately‚ nothing could be done for the patients and they were declared dead on the scene.

“Twelve other patients were found on the scene. Four patients were in a critical condition while eight others had sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.

Paramedics immediately began their assessment and treatment of the patients‚ providing the critically injured with advanced life support‚” Meiring said.

Once treated‚ the patients were transported to various hospitals in the area for urgent treatment‚ he added.

The road was closed for some time due to the collision.
