Poor councils are partying it up: report

Having no income would normally mean there’s nothing to celebrate.

That‚ however‚ doesn’t seem to have deterred the Mhlontlo municipality in the Eastern Cape from spending “more than R100 000” on entertainment despite not bringing in one cent of revenue.

The Mail & Guardian newspaper reported on Friday that 225 poor local municipalities had “splurged R17 786 000 on entertainment in the second quarter of 2015 although their collective income was just shy of R14-million”.

Another Eastern Cape big spender‚ according to the report‚ was the Mbhase municipality which handed over R400 000 on merriment‚ but had just “R31 000 in its coffers”.

But topping the charts was the Kagisano-Molopo municipality‚ which spent R4-million while recording income of just under R37 000. – TMG Digital
