A woman testified how she was woken by her twin sister's screams when she was allegedly assaulted by her former boyfriend.
Siphokazi Mandleleni told the South Gauteng High Court sitting in the Randburg Magistrate's Court yesterday that on September 5 last year she rushed to her sister's room and was confronted by Patrick Wisani at the door.
It is alleged the former ANCYL Johannesburg branch chairman, 30, killed Nosipho Mandleleni, 24, in Yeoville, Johannesburg.
" I was sleeping when I was woken up by screams around 4am.
"I heard that it was (my twin sister) Nosipho. I went to the room where she slept with Patrick and knocked. Patrick opened the door. I told him I was tired of him beating my twin sister and he said he had stopped beating her. He was carrying a broken bloodied broomstick. He pushed me back and locked the door. I went to the room and slept," she said.
Mandleleni said whenever she spoke to Nosipho about Wisani's violence towards her, she would tell her not to get involved in her relationship and that Wisani loved her.
She said she had last seen her sister the previous day when they went out drinking.
The following day Mandleleni received a call from a friend that her sister had been found dead.
"I was angry at Patrick because he lied to the police that Nosipho could not wake up when he tried to wake her, yet he beat her up."
On May 22 this year, she said Wisani confronted her and her friend Zimbini after leaving a club. "He came to me and said I was big-headed, naughty and will kill me as he killed my sister. He slapped me and I pushed him back.
"He said I must not go to court to testify against him and must withdraw the charges.
"Patrick punched and kicked me all over my body until I fell down. When Zimbini tried to stop him, he slapped her and tried to strangle her," she said.
The court heard the women were rescued by two men who took them home. Another witness, Zukiswa Solani, who rented a room near Wisani's, said on that morning she was woken by noise from her neighbours at about 4am.
"I heard the noise of two people and it was the accused and his wife [Nosipho]. I then went back inside my room and slept. I woke up around 9am and saw paramedics in the house and was later informed that Nosipho had died."
Wisani handed himself over to the police two days later. His R3000 bail was revoked for allegedly assaulting Siphokazi. Wisani's attorney, advocate Andile Mavatha told the court he could not represent the accused in his murder trial after he gave instructions how to represent him.
Wisani welcomed the move and said he would defend himself. He pleaded not guilty to Nosipho's murder.
