Former Bafana Bafana captain and South African Football Association (Safa) Technical Director Neil Tovey is in critical condition after suffering a heart attack on Sunday.
The 54-year-old African Nations Cup-winning captain suffered the heart attack while in training back home in Durban on Sunday afternoon and was rushed to a hospital in Hillcrest.
His brother Mark Tovey confirmed the incident in a statement issued by Safa on Sunday night and said the former Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu player was in a critical condition. Doctors are struggling to stabilize him.
“He suffered a heart attack while training this afternoon and was rushed to hospital. We await the doctor’s report and the next few hours are going to be critical,” said Mark Tovey.
SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan said he was shocked to learn about the incident and wished Tovey a speedy recovery.
“We trust he will pass through this challenge," Jordaan said.
