Prisoner who shot cop said to be hiding in Tembisa court building

Police are keeping mum about the shooting of an officer at the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court in Ekurhuleni on Wednesday.

It is understood that an awaiting trial prisoner shot a police captain and then escaped from the holding cells.

Speculation on social media is that the officer died after being airlifted to hospital.

Provincial police spokesman Captain Mavela Masondo said: “We will release a statement on the matter in two hours.”

Asked what the officer’s condition was‚ Masondo said details would be given in the statement.

An employee who spoke to TMG Digital on condition of anonymity said the officer was shot just outside the holding cells.

“He was due to appear in Court 4‚” said the employee as she struggled to breathe.

“I am scared. We have been asked to vacate the building as police search for the suspect. He is believed to be in the building‚” said the employee. – TMG Digital/Sowetan
