New public protector to reveal why Madonsela’s state capture probe ‘can't be a priority’

Incoming public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane will‚ in an interview to air on Thursday night‚ reveal why she believes her predecessor’s probe into state capture “can’t be a priority”.

That’s according to journalist Aldrin Sampear? @AldrinSampear who tweeted: “EXCLUSIVE #SABCNews interview this evening: #PublicProtector Mkhwebane explains why STATE CAPTURE investigation can’t be a priority”.

Mkhwebane‚ an advocate‚ was officially appointed to the position on Thursday morning by President Jacob Zuma “for a period of seven years”. She will take over the reins on October 15.

Zuma “thanked outgoing public protector‚ advocate Thuli Madonsela for her services and wished advocate Mkhwebane all the best in the execution of her new responsibilities”.

Business Day reported earlier this week that Madonsela would likely interview Zuma on Thursday in the final leg of her investigation into state capture and allegations that he abused power and allowed friends‚ the Gupta family‚ to influence state business.

The probe is viewed by African National Congress (ANC) leaders critical of Zuma as a last-ditch attempt to rein him in and neutralise the influence of the Gupta family after an ANC attempt to investigate the same thing failed dismally.

Mkhwebane’s nomination as the next public protector was confirmed by the National Assembly almost a month ago‚ and Zuma’s announcement on Thursday confirmed its “recommendation”.

Her recommendation came with some controversy after the Democratic Alliance made spy claims about Mkhwebane‚ saying it was “suspicious” that she was “on the payroll” of the State Security Agency.

The ANC described this as a “reckless dirty claims…being peddled with impunity without even providing a shred of evidence to back them”.
