Two Uber drivers and a security guard in court

Two Uber drivers and a security guard are having their day in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court for various alleged crimes.

This follows numerous recent reports of violence by drivers of the buddy sharing system.

In one incident popular singer Tamara Dey’s mother Susan was allegedly kidnapped‚ attacked and raped by a group of men after she had called for an Uber taxi.

 One of the drivers‚ Price Makhathini‚ appeared in court on Monday where he was charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to a female passenger.

According to a statement read out in court‚ Makhathini kicked the passenger in the stomach.

Makhathini who was dressed in a brown jacket and blue pants appeared visibly calm throughout the court.

After the magistrate granted him R1‚000 bail‚ Makhathini raised his hand and asked to “make a phone call“.

The matter was postponed to October 11 at the same court.

Meanwhile another Uber driver and a security guard who were arrested on Thursday and Friday respectively were expected to appear in the in the regional section of the same court on Monday afternoon.

Police arrested the two suspects who allegedly used Uber services to rob‚ assault and rape their victims.

 The pair was arrested in Mpumalanga and Germiston.

 Police are looking for a third suspect.

A couple was attacked in August by an Uber driver and a two other men who jumped out of the boot of the Uber they were riding in and kidnapped the couple.

The pair was taken to a place in Tembisa were they were allegedly assaulted‚ robbed and the woman raped.
