Students evacuated after fire at UKZN residence for the physically challenged

A group of about 70 students was evacuated after a mattress and fridge were set alight in a corridor of the Charles James Residence for the physically challenged at the Howard Campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) at around midnight.

None of the students were injured in the fire‚ which was quickly brought until control.

Students took to social media expressing fear about their safety after the fire was started.

Other students also posted that campus security was targeting male students in the men’s residence. Amongst the students’ grievances is the violent treatment by campus security.

On Tuesday night‚ fire fighters managed to contain a fire that was started at the law library on Howard Campus.

Law lecturer Franaaz Khan posted on social media that the fire which started at about 6pm was brought under control with minimal damage‚ and commended the fire services and metro who were working to minimise smoke and water damage.

The campus was the scene of violent clashes during the day as police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse protesters. – TMG Digital/Sunday Times
