“This team is made up of doctors‚ a professor‚ community development activists and‚ plainly‚ people who have a deep love for their city‚ people with a passion for development‚ and people who want what’s best for this city‚” he said.

“If I wish to professionalise the civil service‚ I need to start by setting an example with the appointment of my MMCs (members of the mayoral committee).”

His team consists of the MMCs for Finance‚ Dr Rabelani Dagada; Economic Development‚ Sharon Peetz; Development Planning‚ Richard Funzela Ngobeni; Environment and Infrastructure Services‚ Anthony William Still; Housing‚ Mzobanzi Ntuli; Transport‚ Nonhlanhla Helen Makhuba; Public Safety‚ Michael Sun; Corporate and Shared Services‚ Dr Valencia Ntombi Khumalo; Community Development‚ Nonhlanhla Sifumba; and Health and Social development‚ Dr Mpho Phalatse.

Mashaba emphasised that the councillors he had appointed into his executive committee were not his friends.

“Ladies and gentlemen‚ the people you see behind me here are not my close friends. This is not any form of payback or cadre deployment.”

Mashaba said he was mindful of the daunting task that lay ahead and that he has chosen a team who understood the challenges facing the city.

“Over 800 000 of our fellow residents are unemployed‚ they are out of school. The challenge before us is daunting. The team I will announce must be of committed people‚ ready to be civil servants with integrity and change the lives of our people‚ especially the poor who have been neglected for far too long.

“This team must create equal opportunities for all residents. It must create an environment which will make business invest to create jobs.”

Mashaba said he would translate the DA’s vision for jobs into reality and start dealing with corruption.
