Voting for Joburg speaker begins

The voting for the speaker of council in the City of Johannesburg is just about to begin.

Under the watchful eye of Judge President Dunstan Mlambo‚ the Electoral Commission of SA will conduct the election process to decide who is the speaker of the country’s economic hub. Two names have been nominated for this position.

The African National Congress nominated Constance Bapela to take the position of speaker of council. Bapela has served as speaker in council for the past five years up until the August 3 elections.

The Democratic Alliance nominated Vasco Da Gama.

After the speaker has been elected‚ the city manager Trevor Fowler‚ who has been running proceedings‚ will step down allowing the new speaker to take over the reins.

The new speaker will then preside of the election of the executive mayor and the chief whip of council.

This is the first time since the dawn of democracy in 1994 that the City of Johannesburg has been this closely contested While the Electoral Commission of SA set up the room for the voting‚ members of the Economic Freedom Fighters sang struggle songs in the city hall.
