Council for Geoscience manager Michelle Grobbelaar confirmed on Friday morning that a tremor measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Eastern Cape‚ in the Makomereng area close to the Lesotho border.
“It was recorded at 4.1-magnitude‚ which‚ according to world standards‚ is normal or low‚” she said.
3.1 magnitude tremor rocks Durban
Grobbelaar said this region was a hotspot and is constantly monitored.
“It is not a new thing‚ we have been monitoring this region because earth tremors take place where they have occurred before‚ we keep a close watch.”
This is the second tremor to be felt in KwaZulu Natal in 2016. In February‚ the province recorded a 3.1-magnitude tremor.
The tremor‚ which was reportedly felt in Pietermaritzburg‚ uMhlanga‚ Pinetown and Durban Central happened just after 8.30pm on Thursday.
Social media was abuzz with the hashtags #Durbantremor and #wewillrebuild trending as people took to twitter to share the experience.
Gitte Wehr posted: “I felt the tremor here in Amanzimtoti. Even the pens on my desk shook‚ so that is a confirmation from toti”.
S’thandile Khuzwayo said she felt it in the uMhlanga area.
Other Twitter users had a somewhat more alarming take on the situation. Paul Masilo tweeted: “This may be very ugly and devastating‚ we need a contingency plan‚ this is the beginning of Armegeddon.”
A political joke was thrown into the mix with Vusi Khambule saying‚ “ I think it’s the ANC shaking worried about DA.”
