Thuli Madonsela’s current deputy Kevin Malunga and respected struggle veteran Willie Hofmeyr have not made the cut‚ as five candidates are shortlisted to become South Africa’s new Public Protector.

The five who made the cut from 14 to take on the job when Madonsela leaves in October are:

- Judge Siraj Desai; his “public spats” with Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe and Judge Lee Bozalek raised concern about his temperament‚ with one MP stating that the position “requires you to have a cool head”.

- Sharise Weiner‚ a high court judge who was one of the founding members of Lawyers for Human Rights in South Africa;

 - Professor Bongani Majola‚ who has a law degree from Harvard and works for the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda;

 - Muvhango Lukhaimane‚ an academic and the country’s pension funds adjudicator; and

- Busisiwe Mkhwebane‚ an admitted attorney‚ former investigator in the office of the public protector and currently an analyst at the State Security Agency.

Their selection was made by a multi-party parliamentary committee.
