A senior Free State municipal official has been arrested for the murder of his girlfriend.
Mantsopa Local Municipality Chief Financial Officer Donald Matsie was arrested at his home in Ladybrand during the early hours of Saturday morning for the murder of Tshidi Lisenyane.
Ladybrand police spokesperson Captain Phumelelo Dlamini said Matsie (35) and his friend‚ Mosebudi Moshodi (47)‚ were arrested at Matsie’s home.
“Police arrived at the scene following a call from community members. The victim was found unresponsive with a gunwound at the back of her right ear. The two suspects were arrested on the spot‚” Dlamini said.
Dlamini added that Matsie was charged with murder as he was believed to have pulled the trigger while Moshodi was charged with negligent use of a firearm.
“The pair appeared in court on Monday. Matsie remains in jail while Moshodi has been released on R1000 bail.
Mantsopa Local Municipal Manager Selby Selepe said he was aware of the arrest.
“I will not be able to give you any more details due to the sensitive nature of the matter. It is also private‚ so we would wish to respect that‚” Selepe said.
According a family friend of the vistim’s who did not wish to be named‚ the mother of one had been dating Matsie for three years and was also an employee of the municipality.
“The sad part is that she left behind a very young child. Her baby girl was just six years old and she was also a breadwinner at her home so I don’t know how her family is going to cope without her‚” said the friend.
Matsie will be back in court on August 16 for a bail application.
