Bank tellers will be sitting inside a shipping container to bring financial services to residents of Tembisa‚ Ekurhuleni‚ where a tornado recently struck the Phumulani Mall in the township.

The mobile bank was designed by First National Bank as a mobile banking initiative to bring banking services to rural communities.

The container has normal banking infrastructure such as an ATM‚ automated deposits teller and teller services

Inside the container‚ there will also be two tellers and two service consultants.

FNB said the mobile unit is expected to be placed at Phumulani Mall in a few weeks time‚ once the area has be cleared by municipal authorities.

On July 26‚ the roof of Phumulani Mall caved in during the tornado‚ which left a trail of damage in Ekurhuleni and forcing closure of all banking services in the mall.

Today‚ FNB said the mobile unit was initially intended for the community of Mutale‚ Limpopo. However‚ following the natural disaster‚ it will be temporarily placed in Tembisa to help residents access banking services.

Explaining why it developed the mobile system‚ Lee-Ann van Zyl‚ CEO of FNB Points of Presence‚ said: “South Africa still has a large section of the population that has limited access to banking facilities and we want to turn this around. The first step for us was to think about an innovative way of delivering a full suite of banking facilities to rural communities in a convenient fashion. We decided to introduce a fully quipped mobile banking unit that caters for transactional banking‚ teller services‚ an ATM and an automated deposits teller‚ which enables customers to deposit cheques‚ prepaid purchases‚ opening Savings and Investment Accounts and the option to apply for a loan.”
