Police are still trying to identify a middle-aged man who died after dousing himself with petrol and setting it alight at Montecasino on Sunday evening.

“This person is not known so we need to establish who he is through investigation. We will then notify the family and release his details thereafter‚” said Gauteng police spokesperson Tsekiso Mofokeng.

One person was slightly injured during the incident.

“She (the lady who sustained minor injuries) was just a bystander. The detectives have spoken to her and she is fine‚” said Douglasdale police spokesman Balan Muthan.

Priya Naidoo‚ general manager of group communications for the Tsogo Sun Group‚ said on Monday that precautionary measures were immediately taken to ensure the safety of visitors to the casino and leisure complex.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends. Please direct all queries to the SAPS‚” said Naidoo.

Naidoo did not respond to questions about security measures in place at the time of the incident and whether this was the first such incident at the complex.

When a TMG Digital news team arrived at the scene on Monday it found the area cordoned off with red tape while a clean-up was in progress.
