A three year-old boy survived being thrown from a sixth floor balcony in Hillbrow by his father on Wednesday morning.

The 41-year-old father‚ however‚ died after he then threw himself from the building during a standoff with police after a heated argument with his wife.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Tsekiso Mofokeng said the problem started on Tuesday afternoon when the man had an altercation with his wife.

“He stabbed both his wife‚ 33‚ and son‚ 11‚ with a sharp object on the lower body‚” said Mofokeng.

His wife managed to escape but the man trapped their three-year-old son‚ and police hostage negotiators were called in to handle the situation.

The drama continued until the early hours of Wednesday.

“…At about 1.15am‚ the man threw the child from the sixth floor balcony to the ground‚ and he also jumped. The man was certified dead on the scene‚ and the wife and children were admitted to a local hospital for treatment‚” said Mofokeng.
