The fraud and money laundering case against Sbu Ndebele‚ currently South Africa’s ambassador to Australia‚ and five others has been postponed to September 1.

Magistrate Nicca Setshogoe‚ of the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court‚ postponed the matter to afford the defence a proper chance to study the final indictment.

Both the defence and the state agreed that the case should be postponed to September.

Prosecutor Peter Serunye told Setshogoe that this arrangement came about as defence had only been given the final indictment on Wednesday morning.

“It took us some time to compile our docket‚” Serunye told court.

“The arrangement between the parties is that the matter be remanded… to the 1st of September‚ on which day we’ll then indicate to court the way forward.”

It is expected that the matter will be transferred to the North Gauteng High Court on that day.

Ndebele and his co-accused were arrested and formerly charged in December.

He is accused of having accepted a bribe of R10-million while still transport minister in 2010 from Tasima‚ a company managing the National Traffic Information System (eNaTIS)‚ for the illegal extension of a contract worth more than R2-billion.

George Mahlalela‚ Ndebele’s former director-general at the department‚ sat near him in court.

The other accused in the dock — Gilbert Thwala‚ Tebogo Mphuthi‚ Justin Ncube and a representative of Tasima — come from companies accused of being party to the bribe.
