Motorists were warned of at least two protests south of Johannesburg on Wednesday morning‚ while commuters were advised that trains on the Katlehong corridor weren’t running.

Angry residents blocked roads with burning tyres in Riverlea Extension 2‚ reportedly venting over unfulfilled housing promises although a caller to 702 just after 5am believed it had to do with illegal electricity connections.

Shawn Walters ?@shawnawalters posted a picture with an alert on Twitter: “@EWNTraffic @ewnreporter @ewnbreaking @SAPoliceService #protestors at Main Reef and Commando in Riverlea Ext2”.

This prompted @EWN Traffic to later advise: “#Protest Action — Riverlea ext 2 at Commando/Main Reef closed. Use Albertina Sisulu via Mayfair or Ontdekkers Main Road past Westbury.”

Rob Byrne ?@TrafficSA warned of unrest on the route linking Johannesburg to the Vaal in the Meyerton area: “JHB — R59 Route‚ #ProtestAction at Meyerton — expect delays / diversions”.

Police had reportedly managed to open the highway early on Wednesday‚ but were wary of a flare-up of hostilities.
