Warrant out for councillor who omitted to tell court of theft conviction

The East London Magistrate’s Court has issued a warrant of arrest for Nkonkobe Municipality ward councillor Nanziwe Rulashe for failing to disclose during her bail application that she has a previous conviction and a pending criminal case.

During her judgment‚ presiding magistrate Robin Taylor said the Hawks‚ who are investigating a R2.5-million fraud against Rulashe and three other accused‚ have a duty to arrest her and bring her before the court to determine conditions of her bail.

The state brought an application on Friday arguing that Rulashe forfeits her bail and be sent to prison for failing to disclose her past conviction and pending cases.

She was convicted of theft in Cape Town in 2004.

In 2009‚ Sunnyside police in Pretoria circulated Rulashe as a wanted person in connection with identity fraud after it emerged she was in possession of two identity documents.

She is the owner of the Miss Amathole Heritage‚ a company that was awarded a R2.5-million donation by the Amathole District Municipality to host the annual beauty pageant.

The Hawks arrested her when they discovered she had allegedly used the monies for personal gain. – TMG Digital/Daily Dispatch
