Wedding cards concealing heroin seized at OR Tambo airport

South African Revenue Service Customs officials at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo Airport have discovered wedding cards en-route to Australia concealing 3‚5kg of heroin worth a street value of over R1 million.

The parcel containing the cards was profiled by the dog detector unit during a routine inspection at an international courier company at the OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday.

“The weight of the A4 sized cards were extremely inconsistent with that of a normal card and upon examination‚ were found to have false compartments containing a powdery substance. The substance tested positively for heroin. The exact rand value of the consignment is R1‚050‚000‚” Sars said in a statement.

In a separate case‚ also at OR Tambo International‚ a female South African passenger on an inbound flight from Addis Ababa‚ Ethiopia‚ was stopped and found to be carrying 4‚2kg of cocaine‚ valued at R1‚2 million.

The bust took place after an examination of the passenger’s backpack revealed a false compartment containing a white powder testing positive for cocaine‚ Sars said.

Both cases and confiscations were handed to the South African Police Service for further investigation.
