ANC’s ‘flip flop on SABC nothing but damage control’

The Democratic Alliance has slated ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu’s “flip flop” on the SABC is nothing but damage control.

DA federal executive chairperson James Selfe described it as a “desperate attempt to try and salvage their deployee‚ Hlaudi Motsoeneng‚ and hide the fact that they are really behind much of his machinations at the public broadcaster”.

He was commenting on Mthembu’s statements at a news briefing on Tuesday at which he said the ANC could not condone the censorship at the SABC‚ adding that it was a contravention of the constitution.

“The decision of the SABC to desist from showing images of the destruction of property has not been consulted with or condoned by the African National Congress‚” Mthembu told journalists.

He added that the ANC would be meeting with Communications Minister Faith Muthambi and called for an inquiry into allegations which “tarnished the image of the ANC” in respect to current developments at the SABC.

Selfe said the ANC had said nothing when Muthambi had attacked those protesting against SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

“In fact‚ their National Spokesperson‚ Zizi Kodwa‚ implied those picketing outside SABC were trying to capture the broadcaster. The ANC also allowed their Youth League — just yesterday — to back Motsoeneng.”

Despite Mthembu’s “baseless claims”‚ it was the DA’s court action that had sought to strengthen the public broadcaster by ridding it of Motsoeoeng and his cohorts at the corporation‚ Selfe added.

He said the DA had been the only political party that was presently still fighting to have the remedial actions of the Public Protector honoured as established by the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) and the Constitutional Court.

“That the ANC now wishes to back some sort inquiry is irrational.

“This about turn by the ANC must therefore be treated with much sceptism. If the ANC really want to be taken seriously‚ they would be loud and clear: and demand that Mr Motsoeneng be fired before even being made permanent.

“The truth is that the ANC simply cannot be trusted. If the ANC was serious they would have already called for Mr Motsoeneng to be removed.

“This is despite the DA warning the ANC government form the very beginning that Mr Motsoeneng was not a fit and proper person when he was appointed acting COO at the SABC‚” Selfe added.
