Arrest of two more suspects leads to postponement of Krugersdorp triple murder

Two more suspects have been arrested in the Krugersdorp triple murder case‚ in which an estate agent‚ whose body was found by schoolchildren‚ and two insurance brokers were killed.

The two men accused of the murders‚ Johannes Christian Kruger‚ 29‚ and Fabian Luff‚ 32‚ appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning where they were expected to apply for bail.

Prosecutor Jacqueline Steyn asked the court for a postponement‚ however‚ to allow the two new suspects to join the matter.

They were arrested at 0.45 on Friday morning and will be added to the charge sheet on Monday‚ she said.

She added that new evidence has come to light in the investigation.

Kruger and Luff are allegedly responsible for the murders of estate agent Hanlé Lategan and insurance brokers Anthony Scholefield and Kevin McAlpine‚ who were all killed within a three-week period last month.

Their deaths sparked fears in the community that a serial killer might be on the loose.

Kruger’s attorney Victor da Silva objected to Steyn’s request for a postponement‚ saying his client’s right to a speedy bail hearing was being violated.

Magistrate Delize Smit said the request was reasonable as new facts had surfaced and granted the postponement.

Kruger and Luff‚ dressed in black and grey sweaters‚ made no eye contact with the public gallery as they ascended from the court’s holding cells to the dock.

In a statement‚ police said that the new arrests‚ made by the team of investigators assigned to the case‚ were of a 20-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman in Krugersdorp.

Acting West Rand Cluster Commander Brigadier Sipho Ngubane said: “Hard work‚ long hours and groundbreaking investigation methods lead to this breakthrough.”

Speaking outside court‚ Lategan’s brother Ferde de Wit commended the police’s investigation.

“I think they are doing a very good and thorough investigation. I believe that the right people will be arrested‚” he said.

Scholefield’s wife and son were in court but declined to comment.

Kruger‚ Luff and the two others will return to court on Monday.
