A KwaZulu-Natal guest house owner has used the Bible to justify his decision to ban black people from its facilities.

The Sodwana Bay Guest House came under fire on when an email sent to a woman whose booking was turned down on the basis of her race did the rounds on social media.

In the email‚ owner Andre Slate responds to the woman who made a booking inquiry by saying: “Hi we do not accommodate black people or government employees any longer.”

Slate told TMG Digital that the lodge came to the decision two months ago‚ before referring to scriptures he posted along with the email sent to the woman.

“Yes‚ I sent the email on Wednesday and‚ as you have seen on the email‚ there is a link and scriptures. Please read those and you will understand. Everything you are asking me is explained on the link‚” Slate said.

The Bible scripture — Proverbs 29:2 from the King James Version – reads: “When the righteous are in authority‚ the people rejoice; but when the wicked beareth rule‚ the people mourn.”

“It’s for a specific purpose‚ as you will read for yourself. We live by certain rules and this is how everything is going to be‚” Slate added.

Social media was abuzz on Thursday with users calling for it to be either boycotted and shut down. – TMG Digital
