Suspended police crime intelligence boss Richard Mdluli is applying for his discharge on assault and kidnapping charges in the Johannesburg High Court on Friday. Here is a brief biography and timeline:

August 1979: Mdluli joins the South African Police.

July 2009: Mdluli is appointed head of police crime intelligence.

March 2011: Mdluli is arrested and charged with 18 criminal charges‚ including murder. The murder charge stemmed from the killing of Oupa Ramogibe in 1999.

Ramogibe and Mdluli were both involved in a relationship with Tshidi Buthelezi.

May 2011: Mdluli is suspended from office.

September 2011: Mdluli is arrested on charges of fraud and corruption. The charges originate from the alleged unlawful utilisation of funds held in the Secret Service account for the private benefit of Mdluli and his wife.

17 November 2011: Mdluli’s legal representatives make representations to Lawrence Mrwebi‚ head of the Specialised Commercial Crimes Unit‚ seeking the withdrawal of the fraud and corruption charges.

He also mentions that a similar approach had been made to Advocate Andrew Chauke‚ the Director of Public Prosecutions for South Gauteng‚ for the withdrawal of the murder and related charges.

5 December 2011: Mrwebi withdraws fraud and corruption charges.

1 February 2012: Chauke provisionally withdraws murder and related charges to complete an inquest into the case

16 May 2012: Freedom Under Law seeks order reviewing decisions by Mrwebi and Chauke

2 November 2012: Inquest concludes there is no evidence implicating Mdluli in the murder of Ramogibe.

23 September 2013: High Court in Pretoria sets aside decisions taken by Mrwebi and Chauke.

April 2014: The Supreme Court of Appeal confirms the setting aside of Mrwebi’s decision to withdraw fraud and corruption charges.

The Supreme Court of Appeal also reverses the order setting aside Chauke’s decision. It says Chauke withdrew the murder charge pending the outcome of the inquest that he had requested in order to avoid a fragmented trial.

March 2015: NPA announces it will reinstate some of the 18 charges against Mdluli‚ including kidnapping and assault.

June 2015: The trial of Mdluli for charges relating to the murder of Ramogibe starts.

6 July 2015: Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria struck fraud and corruption charges against Mdluli off the roll.

June 24 2016: At the end of the state’s case‚ Mdluli asks for a discharge.
