Gauteng police have confirmed that two people have been killed in violent protests in Tshwane.
“Yes‚ the two people were killed in Mamelodi. This happened last night‚ not today‚” said police spokesperson Noxolo Kweza.
No details were immediately available.
Mamelodi has been a hot spot overnight. Looting continued into the morning and foreign shop owners were forced to evacuate their premises‚ to seek protection at the police station as residents went on a rampage looting every shop.
At 3pm‚ the situation was calm. The angry crowd which tried to storm into the Denlyn Mall had dispersed and police officers sent to the mall had left.
