Reeva’s cousin doesn’t feel Oscar gave a ‘true version’

Reeva Steenkamp’s cousin Kim Martin testified on Wednesday that all her family wanted was to find out what happened to her cousin.

“All we ever wanted is the truth. Oscar’s version changed so many times. I never heard him saying: ‘I apologise for shooting and murdering Reeva’. I don’t feel the true version came out‚” Martin said.

Martin was the state’s first witness who testified in aggravation of sentence in 2014 when Pistorius was initially found guilty of culpable homicide for shooting and killing his girlfriend Steenkamp on February 14‚ 2013.

Martin’s father is the brother of Steenkamp’s father‚ Barry.

She told the court that the death of Steenkamp had changed her life completely.

“Besides the obvious anxiety and depression‚ as a family we will never be able to go on like this.”

Martin said she saw her father cry for the very first time. “Losing a family member was a big part of our lives.”

She also decried the fact that Pistorius had recorded an interview to be screended by ITV.

“I heard on radio and TV that he has done the interview. I am not happy about that at all. It is very unfair. You want to talk to the world about your version when you had an opportunity to do so in court. I don’s understand why.”

The initial culpable homicide conviction was set aside by the Supreme Court of Appeal in December last year and replaced with a murder conviction.

The appeal court referred the matter back to the High Court in Pretoria to consider an appropriate sentence. — TMG Digital
