Barry Steenkamp tried to self-harm to feel Reeva’s pain

Reeva Steenkamp’s father‚ trembling and weeping in the witness stand‚ on Tuesday spoke of his attempts to feel the pain he imagined his daughter must have felt in the “awful” moments before her murder.

“What she must have thought in those seconds‚ she must have been in so much fear and pain. That is what I think of all the time‚ I visualize (it)‚” Port Elizabeth horse trainer and pub owner Barry Steenkamp said.

“I didn’t know if I was going mental…”

The 73-year-old testified that he stuck his diabetes needles in his arms and stomach to try to see if he could feel the pain she felt.

Talking of his wife June‚ he said: “I hearing her crying‚ I hear her talking to Reeva‚ she feels just as much as I do.”

Reeva Steenkamp‚ 29‚ was shot four times in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013‚ by her boyfriend Oscar Pistorius‚ who testified he had mistakenly believed there was an intruder in the toilet of his Pretoria estate home.

He is in the Pretoria High Court to hear what sentence he must serve‚ after his conviction was changed to murder from culpable homicide on appeal.
