Hlaudi copies the worst of apartheid

A pipe-smoking former leader once angered some among us by saying what those who got angry knew was true - that South Africa is a country of two nations: one black and poor, and the other white and rich.

For some strange reason, truth always makes some people angry. It would seem that there will always be people whose role in society is to make you believe that what you see is not true.

It is not that such people don't know the truth; they simply don't want you to believe it, for they know that, were you to know and believe the truth, you would be liberated from their lies.

The idea is to make you live blissfully in an artificial world. In such a world, it is they who tell you what is right and what is wrong. In other words, the manufacturers of lies don't want you to believe that you have the capacity to make up your own mind.

Hlaudi Motsoeneng's decision that the SABC will no longer broadcast public protests where property is destroyed is part of the grand project of creating an artificial world for you.

SABC’s cutting protest footage part of its mandate ‘to educate citizens’

It is not about property. It is about protests in general. As a loyal cadre, Motsoeneng realises that on a daily basis South Africans across the country are protesting against the government.

Typical of manufacturers of lies, Motsoeneng has come up with a subterfuge: to make you believe that he does not want the SABC to promote the destruction of property.

The real purpose is for you not to know that there is a tide of protests in South Africa against the ANC-led government.

Henceforth, you will sit at home and watch President Jacob Zuma cut ribbons to open a clinic or school here and there. Your artificial world will be that of an incorrupt president who is delivering schools and clinics every day, in a country where people are not protesting.

This is precisely what the apartheid government used to do. The SABC under apartheid was used to make people believe that black people were very happy under apartheid, and that the ANC was a band of terrorists trying to disturb the peace of the majority of contented black South Africans.

Under Motsoeneng, the current government also wants you to think that black people are very happy - that the people of Vuwani are very happy, or that they don't exist.

The reality is that the majority of South Africans receive their daily news through SABC television or radio. Every day Motsoeneng determines what you must hear on radio and what you must not see on television.

Motsoeneng has now announced that he no longer wants you to see people protesting. To bribe you, Motsoeneng began by telling you that, henceforth, you will enjoy listening to 90% South African music on SABC radio.

Before you wake up, the SABC will tell you that there is no poverty and unemployment in South Africa. If you are unemployed, you will be made to believe that you are next to get a job, and that you are about to become part of 90% of South Africans who are very happy.

When Motsoeneng is done, the majority of South Africans who receive news through the SABC would have been turned into robotic creatures who believe everything he tells them.

Already Motsoeneng makes certain that, when you watch SABC news, you never come across ideas such as those expressed in this column. In other words, the SABC has rendered writers like this columnist nonexistent, just as apartheid never broadcast the views of those who condemned racism.

What Motsoeneng is doing is not new. Africans who got their independence before us have seen this movie before - in Kenya, Nigeria, Egypt, Zimbabwe, and so on.

The problem with us black South Africans is that we manufactured and believed our own lies about exceptionalism, the idea that we are different from other Africans.

Had we acknowledged our being African, we would have long anticipated Motsoeneng, for the rest of our continent has seen many Motsoenengs before.

By the way, most Motsoenengs in Africa are educated, even though their actions are not different from the one without matric. The purpose is the same: to manipulate the minds of citizens to the point where they believe that what is true is not true.

The endgame is the conversion of the citizen into a zombie, a mindless being jumping at the behest of its magical creator. We are indeed witnessing the very zombification of the South African citizen.

In a context where the one without matric controls the institution that has the power to manipulate people's minds, pipe-smoking lovers of truth get relegated to the status of irritating mosquitoes that must be made to squirm on the margins.

That is when lies become truth and truth becomes lies, the point at which we are all doomed.
