Accolades for Eskom EXPO for Young Scientists at Netherland Science Fair

The Eskom EXPO for Young Scientists won two awards at the INESPO International Science Fair in the Netherlands that took place from May 29 to June 3 2016.

The International Environment & Sustainability Project Olympiad (INESPO) is an international Olympiad with over 40 different countries participating every year. It is intended for students between 13 and 18 years from high schools and aims to bring attention to environmental problems in the community.

The goal is to involve students in this important matter and bring communal consensus on social environmental values and to eventually eliminate the environmental problems through education‚ Eskom says.

Amalia Geldenhuys from Vredenal won second prize in the energy category with her project Biodiesel from grape seeds‚ Xanthium Strumarium‚ Datura Stramonium and Ricinus Communi. She used oils from grape seeds and seeds of three common invasive plants to produce biodiesel.

Gabriella Fedetto from Johannesburg won third prize in the engineering category with her project Automated Medicine Dispenser.

“Often‚ the benefits of taking medication are hindered when a patient does not follow the dosing instructions of their medicine due to the complexity of the medicine regime or simply due to everyday forgetfulness. Gabriella designed and built an automated medication device to dispense medicine for the benefit of people who are affected by serious illnesses and who live a fast-paced lifestyle and forget to take medication‚” Eskom said.
