An Uber driver in Sandton says he was intimidated by a metered taxi driver on Friday morning.

Charles Visser said he had stopped to smoke‚ when a man approached him.

“He said: ‘Hey Madala … do you want to live?’ I said I was smoking‚” Visser said.

The Uber driver put this conversation on Facebook:

“Interaction at Sandton City: Hey Madala‚ are you Uber? No I’m just smoking a cigarette. Do you want to leave longer? No I’m just smoking a cigarette. Do you value your life? No I’m just smoking a cigarette. You want to die? Oh‚ you want me to leave? I leave‚” Visser said on Facebook.

Speaking to TMG Digital on Friday‚ Visser said he then decided to drive a street down from where he had stopped and carried on with his business.

“They (metered taxi drivers) are in clusters around Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square. You can’t operate outside Mandela Square unless you want a fight‚” Visser said.

Uber said: “We are working with all relevant stakeholders in Pretoria and Gauteng to resolve this as a matter of urgency.”

Last month‚ Uber had to suspend its services after a violent attack on an Uber driver and his passenger on West Street next to the Sandton Gautrain station.

In June last year‚ Uber drivers and clients were assaulted outside the Sandton Gautrain station.
