Creating jobs would be the number one priority if the Democratic Alliances wins control of Tshwane in the coming local government elections‚ according to DA leader Mmusi Maimane.

Addressing a community meeting at Eersterus in Tshwane on Sunday‚ Maimane said he saw the nation’s capital as a city that had the potential to be a blueprint for how a modern African city ought to operate and to be a “jobs haven”.

But‚ under the ANC‚ it had been hamstrung by maladministration and incompetence.

Statistics released last week by StatsSa showed that 40‚000 more residents of the Tshwane had joined the ranks of the unemployed since the beginning of the year.

Currently‚ 517‚000 people in the city could not find work and this number was increasing each year‚ Maimane added.

The DA leader said the new struggle in South Africa was the struggle for jobs and employment.

He noted that of the country’s eight metros‚ the only DA-run metro – Cape Town – had the lowest unemployment rate‚ while Midvaal‚ the only DA-run municipality in Gauteng‚ boasted the lowest unemployment rate in the province.

“The DA will continue to effect change that creates jobs and moves South Africa forward again.”
