The situation is tense in Orange Farm on Monday morning‚ where residents have barricaded the Golden Highway.

Motorists are being warned to avoid the area if possible‚ after cars travelling in the area were attacked.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson‚ Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar‚ confirmed that cars had been pelted with stones.

Minnaar advised motorists to avoid the area.

SAPS cluster spokesman Captain Johannes Motsiri said that residents were burning tyres on the road and had barricaded a part of the highway running through area.

He said the situation was tense‚ but police were on the scene.

“Police are controlling the situation‚” he said.

He said a few days ago‚ the community received a response from the mayoral committee over a memorandum it had handed to Mayor Parks Tau three weeks ago regarding service delivery. According to reports‚ residents also called for the removal of their ward councillor‚ at the time saying he had failed to provide essential services.

Earlier this month‚ eNCA reported that Tau was pelted with stones by some protesters during a visit to the area.

Motsiri said that police had been deployed to the area on Sunday night and public order police had joined them on Monday morning to control the situation.
