ANC alliance calls on Pallo Jordan in Mandela Metro

Two years is a long time in politics, Pallo Jordan‚ a former minister of arts and culture who resigned his seat in Parliament after faking his doctorate‚ is set to re-enter the fray.

A poster by the Nelson Mandela Bay Regional Alliance states Jordan will deliver a Chris Hani memorial lecture at the Port Elizabeth City Hall on Sunday. The alliance refers to him as an “ANC veteran and former ANC NEC member”.

When Jordan delivered a Chris Hani memorial lecture in Johannesburg in April 2003‚ he said Hani had been “a close and very dear friend of mine”.

He praised Hani’s academic record‚ stating: “Born into a family of ordinary working people in Cofimvaba‚ in the Eastern Cape‚ exactly 36 days after me in the year 1942‚ Comrade Chris Hani at a very early age showed great promise as a bright young person‚ with an extremely keen mind and a profound sense of perseverance. It was these qualities that enabled him to advance very quickly through high school and university‚ completing his junior degree at the age of twenty.”

“It might strike many of us as odd that a peasant boy from the Eastern Cape should have acquired such a keen interest in the classics. Chris studied both Latin and Greek at university — subjects in which out-performed many born into families better endowed than his own. Till the end of his days he enjoyed nothing better than discussing the works of Aeschylus‚ Homer and Euripides among the Greeks‚ the writings of Livy‚ Ovid‚ Catullus and Pliny among the Romans. In another place‚ at another time‚ he could easily have become a great classical scholar!”

In September 2012‚ Jordan warned that the ANC could no longer be in denial about corruption and the party should elect core leaders with courage and moral standing to root out corruption at Mangaung. “The elective conference that the ANC holds at the end of the year must rise to the challenge of producing a leadership core that has the will‚ the moral courage and moral standing to take on the task of clearing corruption‚” Jordan said then.

In August 2014‚ he disappeared from public view amid a fake PhD scandal.

The historian and son of academic Professor A.C. Jordan was believed to have obtained a doctorate from the London School of Economics‚ but enquiries by the Sunday Times proved he had never studied there.

The ruling party accepted Jordan’s resignation from parliament‚ asking South Africans to grant him time to deal with his guilt.
