The assassination of Chris Hani 23 years ago was commemorated this weekend‚ with chaplains using the occasion to condemn calls for President Jacob Zuma to resign and for the nation to accept his apology for the “frustration and confusion” caused by the Nkandla saga.

But Naledi Pandor‚ an ANC’s national executive committee member‚ said Hani would “be horrified to learn that his organisation has corruption as part of the exercise of political office‚ by some within it”. She was speaking at a commemoration event in Boksburg on Saturday.

Hani was the general secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP)‚ a member of the ANC’s national executive committee and uMkhonto we Sizwe. He was gunned down at his Boksburg home in 1993 by Janusz Walus‚ when negotiations to end apartheid were taking place. The Conservative Party’s Clive Derby-Lewis gave Walus the gun.

The ANC needs another “Chris Hani memorandum” to deal with the political storm within the party‚ South African Communist Party general secretary Blade Nzimande thundered on Sunday.

The Hani memorandum refers to a letter he and others wrote to the ANC leadership in 1969‚ detailing allegations of corruption against ANC leaders in exile.

Nzimande hit out at those who he said were determined to undermine the SACP‚ ENCA reported. “You find that when the SACP says something‚ comrades stand up and state that the SACP shouldn’t have said that… we are not an extension of the ANC‚ we are allies‚ if you have issues with what we say‚ come speak to us… do not tell us to not speak out‚” Nzimande said.

Limpho Hani‚ the wife of Chris‚ said she felt betrayed by the government for its refusal to reopen the murder investigation and get to the bottom of who sanctioned his assassination‚ Eyewitness News reported. She was speaking at his commemoration in Boksburg.

Derby Lewis was last year granted medical parole after being diagnosed with lung cancer. In March the high court in Pretoria ordered that Janusz Walus be freed on parole‚ but the justice ministry is appealing this.
