An ambulance from the Eastern Cape Department of Health was attacked and the crew robbed after their assailants led them into an ambush by pretending to be their escorts.

The head of EMS in Nelson Mandela Bay‚ Brenhan Metune‚ said details were still sketchy because the crew was severely traumatised. He said the incident happened just after midnight in Njali Street‚ KwaZakhele townsip.

Metune said the ambulance were responding to an emergency call involving a pregnant woman. He said it was common practice for ambulances called out to informal settlements to be met by an escort as there were no street names or numbers.

The crew was under the impression that the men who flagged them down were their escorts. Instead they were robbed. Metune said the incident was reported to the police.
