Mystery surrounds the murder of a Bergville farmer who was shot and killed on his property on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said officers rushed to the scene on Tipperary farm in central KwaZulu-Natal after reports of a shooting incident.

“The 46-year-old farmer who has been identified as a Mr Vickers was shot and killed. It is understood that he had left his home and walked outside to have a cigarette when he was attacked by two men,” she said.

It is believed that in the scuffle, two shots rang out.

“Two 9mm bullet casings were found at the scene,” she said.

Gwala added that the investigation into the murder continued in earnest but that no arrests had yet been made.

The Ladysmith Gazette reported that the farmer's family had also been assaulted in the farm attack, the motive of which remained uncertain.
