With the recent wave of racist incidents reaching a new peak today‚ when a pizza-delivery motorcyclist was deliberately targeted by a racist bakkie-driver‚ the Anti-Racism Network (ARN) announced on Monday that this week (14-21 March) was Anti-Racism Week.
The campaign‚ which is being supported by various organisations‚ including the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation‚ the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC)‚ and various political parties‚ winds up on Monday‚ Human Rights Day.
ARN‚ which is a coalition of some 80 organisations‚ said more than 20 years after the official end of apartheid‚ the country was still deeply divided. The coalition was launched in November last year and has since embarked on various anti-racism initiatives.
DAC announced that it would organise a series of lectures at universities throughout the country‚ under the theme “Racism: Not in my Name”.
In its statement‚ it said: “The historical basis of Human Rights Day is attributed to the Sharpeville Massacre that took place on 21 March 1960 where citizens across the country embarked on a protest march to protest against pass laws. The apartheid police shot and killed 69 of the protesters at Sharpeville and many other people were killed in other parts of the country.”
DAC said Sandile Zungu would deliver the third of its series of lectures at the Durban University of Technology in KwaZulu Natal on 15 March 2016.
