Residents from the informal settlement Zandspruit, on Johannesburg's East Rand, were rioting and burning tyres, metro police said on Tuesday.

"The police and City Power had an operation earlier to remove the illegal electrical connections by the residents in the area," metro police spokesperson Marvin Minnaar said.

Minnaar said the residents resisted the operation and started burning tyres and throwing rocks.

Due to the rioting, Beyers Naude was closed between Johan Road and Peter Road.

He advised motorists to use alternative routes.
