The DA has claimed that a group of striking temporary metro police employees removed its eThekwini members from a caucus meeting on Tuesday.
The metro police, however, said no employees were striking, and that there was a clash of venues with the DA.
DA leader, Zwakele Mncwango, told News24 on Tuesday his party were in a caucus meeting at council chambers when a group of striking workers entered the room.
“There were quite a few people and they were singing and dancing. They came in quite hard toward us and at one point even told us to fuck off. However, I spoke to them and we decided to leave the room to avoid the situation going out of control.”
Mncwango lamented the recent habit of disgruntled employees storming eThekwini meetings. “These employees spoke to me and said they are demanding permanent employment because they have been working for the city for 10 to 15 years.
"The mayor and the leadership need to be more transparent with people. If they inform people of what is happening this situation can be avoided... People must be addressed or this will keep happening.”
Mncwango said the group eventually left council chambers and DA members were safe.
Metro police spokesperson, Sibonelo Mchunu, said: “There was no strike action of metro police members. There was a meeting of scholar patrols at City Hall. There was a clash of venues with the DA meeting.”
The eThekwini municipality did not immediately respond to questions on the incident.
